Boring Girls - Review

Description

Rachel feels like she doesn’t fit in — until she finds heavy metal and meets Fern, a kindred spirit. The two form their own band, but the metal scene turns out to be no different than the misogynist world they want to change. Violent encounters escalate, and the friends decide there’s only one way forward . . .

A bloodstained journey into the dark heart of the music industry, Boring Girls traces Rachel’s deadly coming-of-age, Fern at her side — as the madness deepens, their band’s success heightens, and their taste for revenge grows ravenous.

My Thoughts but first a detour...

I actually found out about this book while searching for more songs and interviews on Youtube about The Birthday Massacre: The Band that Sara Taylor or Chibi is the front-woman of. Which if you haven't heard any of their songs you should. They are awesome!

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book, I was going crazy knowing I wouldn't get it for months.... enter NetGalley. I'd heard of the site but was unsure if I should sign up. Well I did, and was heart broken when I was declined but it was the first book I've ever been declined for, ever. It was also the first book I ever requested. It's also the one I wanted most. Go figure.

So I waited the long couple months and snapped it up when I could, reading it over a two day period, one of those days being my birthday. And I wasn't disappointed... much.

   *SPOILER ALERT*

This novel starts out rather slow and kind of boring to me. Just telling us little things about her that really doesn't tie in too well with the rest. Yes, she has creative parents and they helped her to be creative which helped her song writing. But most of the other characters just fell a bit flat to me. Plus, the first guy who she likes does a complete 360 turn in his feelings for her. They only ones that actually felt real to me where, Fern and Rachel herself. The ones just feel like they're their to fulfill roles.

That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy this book, it was a fast read once you get through the first 100 pages. The story is actually a good lesson, not every band is as nice as they appear, young girls need to be careful. Though being a new-adult book I expected more... it felt like a young adult book, except for the language. It doesn't go into any detail in the rape nor any mention of sex at all really. I found that odd.

Now I guess I should start a little more in the beginning, Rachel finds Metal music at a young age and falls in love with the angry sound and most lyrics that make no sense. She is a very good writer and when she finds a few others who share her interest they form a band. Her parents don't take her seriously though and it sometimes makes it harder for her.

One night, Fern and Rachel go to a concert to see their favorite band DED or Die Every Death. It was a great concert and they had a great time and so they decide to try and meet the band. They get back into the dressing room and discover they are not what the girls had imagined. The band rapes the two girls.

Then they vow to get better at the band, it make it big, and then to get onto the same tour as DED, so they can murder them all. Yes, Murder. Let that sink in a bit.

So they work hard and with Rachel's crazy on stage antics (like throwing up on a hater), they soon get pretty famous, traveling overseas with other famous bands. But along the way, Fern, who has lost the will to live except for being crazy and killing a man in an alley and then another later on, gets worse until they receive the news, they are going on tour with DED.

It doesn't take a genius to see how this books ends, they kill the band who raped them, but in a twist I didn't see coming, Fern also kills herself. Rachel ends up in jail. I will say I absolutely hated the ending, I wish there had been more somehow, I know the story would've fallen flat with Rachel being in jail but I just was left needing more. This is a debut novel and I actually really enjoyed it. I'll be checking out her next novel... if she writes one.

So this book gets 3.5 stars but I like to round up :)

Update

I'm still working on getting a laptop so I can fully blog again. It's something I miss so much. I still have no idea when I'll be able to get a new laptop and so any updates will be spotty at best.
